NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite nearly winning the pivotal doubles point, the Belmont University men's tennis team was handed a 7-0 loss by nearby Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt Thursday evening in the Music City. The Bruins (2-4) claimed No. 2 doubles and forced a tiebreaker at the top doubles spot, but the host Commodores (6-2) held on to clinch the doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches.
The duo of sophomore
Charlie Robin and graduate
Will Ecklund defeated Vanderbilt's second tandem of Hugo Coquelin and Nathan Cox 6-3. However, it would be one of only three sets Belmont would win across both singles and doubles at the Lummis Family Tennis Center.
After a 6-1 loss at No. 3 doubles, the Bruins' top doubles pair of senior
Sabi Roi and junior
Stefan Vedovelli went to a tiebreaker with the Commodores' Hoyoung Roh and Pablo Martinez Gomez. Roi and Vedovelli were unable to find a break in the tiebreak, though, and fell 7-4.
In singles action, both Robin and freshman
Austin Yack won sets.
At No. 2 singles, Robin recovered from a 6-0 first set loss to Cox with a 6-3 second set win. However, Robin was defeated 6-3 in the deciding third set.
On court five, Yack gutted out an 8-6 opening set breaker against Vanderbilt's Donghyun Hwang before falling in the second set, 6-2. In the 10-point super tiebreaker in lieu of the third set, it was Hwang who prevailed, 10-6.
Belmont won no more than five combined games in any of the other four singles matches.
