Birmingham, Ala. --Â The Belmont Bruins opened the 2026 season with a three-game road series against the Samford Bulldogs at J.L. Griffin Field, earning a split in Friday's doubleheader before dropping Saturday's finale.
Belmont fell 7–3 in the season opener despite creating several scoring opportunities throughout the game. Samford capitalized on key moments offensively to build its advantage, while the Bruins showed flashes at the plate and worked to find rhythm in their first live competition of the year.
The Bruins answered quickly in Game Two, delivering an explosive offensive performance in a 14–4 victory to even the series. Belmont piled up 17 hits and scored in multiple innings, highlighted by an eight-run second inning that broke the game open early. The production came from up and down the lineup, as Belmont combined timely hitting, extra-base power, and consistent pressure on the bases to seize momentum and force a decisive rubber match.
In Saturday's finale, Samford struck early to take control and the Bruins were unable to recover from the initial deficit in a 10–1 decision. Belmont's bullpen settled the game through the middle innings with several solid relief appearances, and the Bruins pushed across a run in the sixth inning, but Samford added late runs to secure the series win.
Across the weekend, Belmont showed clear offensive upside and depth, particularly in its 17-hit outburst, while also gaining valuable innings from a pitching staff continuing to develop early in the season. The series provided an important opening test on the road, allowed multiple newcomers to see action, and gave the Bruins an opportunity to establish roles and build chemistry as the 2025 campaign gets underway. Belmont demonstrated resilience with its bounce-back effort Friday and will look to carry that momentum forward as it prepares for the next stretch of the season.
