BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Belmont University women's tennis team won the all-important doubles point and the top two singles matches Saturday afternoon at Western Kentucky, but it wasn't quite enough in a 4-3 road loss at the Warren County Tennis Facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The host Lady Toppers (7-6) took four of the six singles matches in straight sets to secure the win.
Â
The Bruins (1-8) clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 triumph at second doubles by graduate
Cielo Tapia-Cruz and freshman
Mia Jones against Western Kentucky's Barbara Olvera and Virginia Madueno. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Jessica Popiol and redshirt freshman
Savannah Webster topped the Lady Toppers' Emily Schut and Andra Sirbu 6-3.
Â
In singles, Webster prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker at the top of the lineup. Taking on Western Kentucky's Isabelle Einess, Webster won the opening set 6-0 before dropping the second, 6-4. In the deciding third set, Webster closed things out by the narrowest of margins as she outlasted Einess 7-5 in the tiebreak.
Â
On court two, Jones also prevailed in three sets. Facing the Lady Toppers' Schut, Jones claimed the first set, 6-3, before falling in the second, 7-5. Playing a 10-point super tiebreaker in lieu of the third set, Jones was taken to extra points but ultimately came out on top, 12-10.
Â
Western Kentucky conceded no more than seven combined games in any match at the No. 3 through No. 6 singles positions.
