Nationally-Ranked Furman Too Much for Women’s Tennis Saturday

Bruins Suffer 7-0 Road Setback in the Palmetto State

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Going up against a talented Furman Unvierstiy squad, the Belmont University women's tennis team was swept on the road Saturday at the Paladins' Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, South Carolina. After dropping the doubles point, the Bruins (1-9) were unable to win more than four combined games in any match across their singles lineup.
 
Nationally-ranked Furman (7-3) took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 6-1 win at the top doubles spot and a 6-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Senior Libbie Hamilton and freshman Ketevan Jeladze trailed the Paladins' Lily Doherty and Macy Hitchcock 4-2 at third doubles.
 
Furman's top doubles duo of Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren are ranked 34th in the nation according to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
 
Redshirt freshman Savannah Webster fell in a 6-1, 6-3 affair at the No. 1 singles spot to the Paladins' Warren, it was the most games any Bruin won.
 
Furman was convincingly victorious in straight sets on all six singles courts.
 
Up Next
Belmont returns to the Music City next weekend, hosting nearby rival Lipscomb on Sunday, March 15 following an eight-day break from match action. Opening match play outdoors on campus at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex, the Bruins and Bisons are scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve.
