NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball team (22–8, 9–2) split a midweek doubleheader with Murray State University Tuesday at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins fell 8–4 in game one before responding with a strong 7–1 victory in game two, highlighted by Maya Johnson reaching 1,000 career strikeouts.Â
VS Murray State – Game 1 (4–8)Â
Murray State jumped out early with a three-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run and an RBI single to take control. Nicole Hughes answered with a home run in the bottom of the first, but the Racers followed with insurance in the middle innings, scoring four runs across the fifth and sixth to extend the lead to 8–1.
Belmont showed fight late, rallying in the seventh inning. Brenna Blume sparked the comeback with a leadoff solo home run to left field. Anna Caskey followed with a single, and Tallulah Eichholz reached to put two runners on before both advanced into scoring position on a passed ball.
Lydia Vanderwoude brought in a run with an RBI groundout, and Rylee Spindler followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8–4. Nicole Hughes and Madison Dolecki each reached base to keep the rally alive, but Belmont was unable to complete the comeback.

VS Murray State – Game 2 (7–1)Â
The Bruins bounced back quickly in game two, taking control early with a five-run first two innings.Â
Nicole Hughes opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first, and Belmont followed with a big second inning. Emily Konz, Rylee Spindler, and Madison Dolecki each delivered RBI hits to stretch the lead to 5–0.Â
After Murray State plated a run in the fourth, Belmont answered right back as Spindler added another RBI. Brenna Blume capped the scoring with her second solo home run of the day in the sixth to secure the 7–1 win.Â
