NASHVILLE, Tenn. --Â Belmont baseball returned to E.S. Rose Park on Friday afternoon, honoring Head Coach Dave Jarvis for his 800th career win in a special pregame ceremony before falling to East Tennessee, 6-3, in the series opener.
Before first pitch, Belmont recognized Head Coach
Dave Jarvis for reaching the 800-win milestone, celebrating a career defined by consistency, leadership, and impact on the program. Surrounded by his team and staff along the first-base line, Jarvis was honored in front of the home crowd in a moment that highlighted his lasting legacy at Belmont.
The game began as a tightly contested battle, with both teams held scoreless through the first two innings. Belmont picked up early hits, including one from Charlie Davis, but was unable to convert those opportunities into runs. East Tennessee broke through in the top of the third inning, stringing together three hits to plate four runs and take control of the game. The visitors followed with two more runs in the fourth, taking advantage of free passes and timely hitting to extend the lead to 6-0.
That third and fourth inning stretch ultimately served as the turning point, forcing Belmont to play from behind for the remainder of the afternoon.
Belmont began to respond in the bottom of the fourth inning, sparked by Cavan McMeans, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. McMeans reached base and came around to score on an RBI double from Mike Sprockett, who turned in a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Bruins continued to battle in the sixth inning behind Jake Maddox, who delivered one of the biggest swings of the day. Maddox, who went 2-for-3, launched a solo home run to cut the deficit to 6-2, adding to his productive afternoon that also included a double.
Belmont kept applying pressure late, once again sparked by McMeans in the eighth inning. After reaching base for the second time, he came around to score on Sprockett's second RBI double of the game, trimming the lead to 6-3 and giving the Bruins life heading into the final frames.
Charlie Davis also contributed with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-5 at the top of the lineup as Belmont totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.
Despite the offensive production, the Bruins were unable to capitalize in key moments, leaving nine runners on base.
After a difficult start, Belmont saw a strong response on the mound from Sam Heyman, who stabilized the game out of the bullpen. The right-hander tossed five shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six, keeping Belmont within striking distance and giving the offense a chance to mount a comeback.
The Bruins will return to action Saturday, April 11Â for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM from E.S. Rose Park.Â
