Men's Tennis Wins Second Straight, Edges Tennessee State 4-3 at Home

Strong Singles Play Propels Bruins Past Tigers at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex Friday Afternoon

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In front of a packed Beaman Family Tennis Complex crowd Friday afternoon, the Belmont University men's tennis team defeated crosstown conference rival Tennessee State 4-3. Avenging their earlier Horizon League loss to the Tigers in March, the Bruins (9-10, 3-2 Horizon) used strong singles play to get past Tennessee State after dropping the doubles point.

Belmont put together four straight-set singles victories, primarily in the second half of the lineup, for the key league win.

The Tigers (3-16, 2-3 Horizon) swept doubles play, including winning a pair of tiebreak sets on courts two and three. Tennessee State's brother duo of Nicholas and Alexander Adamec edged senior Eli Mizerski and sophomore Morgan Woodson 7-3 at the No. 3 spot to secure the doubles point and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the Music City matchup.

Mizerski quickly responded at No. 4 singles, dismissing the Tigers' Nicholas Adamec 6-1, 6-1 to even the match at 1-1.

Sophomore Charlie Robin cruised to a 6-0 first set win against Tennessee State's Mete Koseoglu at second singles before taking set two, 6-4, to give the Bruins the lead.

The Tigers evened the match at 2-2 when James Adler Germinal topped Woodson 6-4, 6-2 at third singles. However, graduate Will Ecklund put Belmont one match away as he bested Tennessee State's Christopher Bogelin 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

It was freshman Bautista Durrels Rojo who clinched the match for the Bruins, doing so at the sixth singles spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Tigers' Tatenda Mutetwa.

In the final match of the afternoon, senior Sabi Roi forced a third-set super tiebreaker at the top of the lineup. Taking on Tennessee State's Taj Hibbert, Roi fought back from a 7-5 opening set tiebreaker that didn't go his way by winning the second 6-4. In the deciding 10-point breaker in lieu of the third set, Hibbert prevailed 10-7.
