Belmont Drops Midweek Against Tennessee

Charlie Davis Lone Run Scorer of the Evening

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont baseball battled one of the nation's top programs inning-for-inning early before falling to Tennessee, 11-1, Tuesday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Facing an electric crowd of 6,244 fans in one of college baseball's toughest road environments, the Bruins kept the game competitive through much of the night and trailed just 5-1 entering the eighth inning before Tennessee used a late offensive surge to pull away.

Charlie Davis led the Bruins offensively, going 1-for-4 and scoring Belmont's lone run of the game. Landon Godsey continued his strong season with a double, while Brady HolbrookJake Maddox, and Brody Langlotz also recorded hits.

Belmont starter Cole Kenyon turned in a competitive outing against the powerful Volunteer lineup, allowing just two runs over 2.2 innings while working around early traffic on the bases. The Bruins also flashed strong defense in the opening inning, turning a 5-4-3 double play to erase a Tennessee scoring opportunity.

The Volunteers struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Levi Clark launched a two-run home run to left-center field, giving Tennessee an early 2-0 advantage.

Belmont responded in the fourth inning with its best offensive sequence of the night. Davis opened the frame with a single through the left side before Godsey moved him into scoring position with a groundout. Holbrook then reached with an infield single, putting runners on the corners with one out. Cavan McMeans followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Davis and trimming the deficit to 2-1.

The Bruins continued to apply pressure offensively in the middle innings. In the sixth, Langlotz singled through the left side and later advanced into scoring position. With two outs, Godsey lined a double down the left field line, but Tennessee escaped further damage to preserve its one-run cushion.

The turning point came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tennessee used the long ball to create separation. Jay Abernathy opened the inning with a solo home run before Garrett Wright added another solo shot later in the frame. After a strikeout, Henry Ford capped the inning with a third home run, extending the Volunteers' lead to 5-1.

Despite the deficit, Belmont's bullpen kept the Bruins within striking distance through the next two innings. Zane Brown tossed a clean sixth inning with a strikeout, while Sam Heyman followed with a scoreless seventh inning, helping Belmont stabilize the game against one of the country's top offenses.

Tennessee finally broke the game open in the eighth inning, capitalizing on four hits, a walk, and a pair of Belmont errors to score six runs. Trent Grindlinger opened the inning with a solo homer before Manny Marin delivered a two-run single up the middle. Pinch hitter Hunter High later connected on a two-run homer to cap the scoring.

Tennessee finished the night with 12 hits, including six home runs, while Belmont totaled five hits and played seven different pitchers in the midweek contest.

Belmont will now shift its focus back to Missouri Valley Conference play for the final regular season series of the year. The Bruins travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, this weekend to face the Indiana State Sycamores.
