NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This spring and summer, a number of Belmont student-athletes spent some time overseas taking part in Belmont's Study Abroad Program. Â
Throughout the summer, Belmont Athletics will highlight the experiences of our student-athletes as they encounter and engage with new landscapes, cultures, and peoples.
Our first reflection is by
Kate McGinnis, a rising sophomore on the women's basketball team.  Kate traveled to Italy with Belmont's Study Abroad Program.
Â
Where did you study abroad this summer?
Italy: Rome, Reggio Emilia, and Florence
What classes did you take?
Introduction to Education Policy
What was your favorite memory of the trip?
The opportunity to meet and teach 5th grade Italian students!
Is there a specific place that you would go back and visit? If so, where and why?
The Vatican, specifically the Sistine Chapel. The detail of the artwork and stories it tells is absolutely beautiful and also mind-blowing.
What was the thing that surprised you the most about the culture and surroundings?
The Italian people live a simple life centered around family and friends. During any meal at a restaurant, the waiters/waitresses expect you and your friends to be there for an hour or two just socializing and talking. They don't rush you to leave but expect you to take your time.
Â
How was the food? What was your favorite meal?
Food was amazing. My favorite meal was the two pastas we made ourselves in a cooking class (ravioli and fettuccine)!
Â
After being overseas for a period of time, what did you miss about home (USA)?
Seeing grass/nature/parks and Mexican food.
Â
Would you recommend other Belmont students student-athletes go on this trip?
Without a doubt.
