Belmont Volleyball Falls in Four-Set Battle of the Boulevard

Bruins claim second set and battle Lipscomb through a tight fourth frame at Curb Event Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University volleyball team (3-8) battled crosstown rival Lipscomb Saturday night in the annual Battle of the Boulevard, ultimately falling 3-1 inside the Curb Event Center. The Bruins answered a first-set setback by taking the second frame before Lipscomb claimed the final two sets.

Lipscomb opened the match with aggressive serving and a strong presence at the net, building an early lead in the opening set. Belmont responded with kills throughout the lineup, eventually tying the frame at 17-17. Back-to-back aces from Brenna Kauffeld gave the Bruins an 18-17 advantage, with strong defensive touches from Alivia Keegan and Mya Bolton helping Belmont maintain momentum. Lipscomb regained control late, however, taking the opening set 25-20. 

Belmont responded in the second set. An early block from Lucy Kay helped spark the Bruins, who built an early lead behind a variety of kills and strong defensive touches from Bolton. Keegan extended Belmont's advantage to five at 17-12 with a dump, while Sydnee Nelson entered and delivered a big kill to help the Bruins become the first team to reach 20. Nelson followed with a block for set point before Kauffeld sealed the frame with a kill, 25-18. 

Nelson remained in the starting lineup for the third set as the Bruins battled Lipscomb early. Keegan's ace tied the frame at 10-10 before the Bison began to create separation with a fast offensive attack. Belmont made lineup adjustments, including Jordan Czajkowski entering as setter and Alexia Smollen moving into the middle, but Lipscomb's lead grew behind its offensive pressure and Belmont errors. The Bison took the third set, 25-17, despite strong defensive work from Bolton. 

Belmont continued to battle in the fourth set, with Keegan returning to the setter position and Kauffeld opening the frame with a kill. Lipscomb maintained a narrow advantage, but strong touches from Lauren Evans and Keegan, along with kills from Kay, Kauffeld and Connie Kofoed, kept the Bruins within striking distance. After Lipscomb reached 20 first, Czajkowski entered to play Kauffeld's back row. A kill from Erin McMullen and an ace from Evans cut the deficit to two, while a big block from McMullen and Kofoed kept Belmont alive. Kauffeld added another ace to make it 22-24, but Lipscomb closed out the set, 25-22, to take the match. 

What's Bruin 

  • Connie Kofoed led Belmont with 12 kills, followed by Brenna Kauffeld with 10 kills while hitting .345. 
  • Erin McMullen and Lucy Kay each added seven kills, with Kay contributing four blocks. 
  • Mya Bolton recorded a match-high 18 digs, while Keegan added 13 and Evans eight. 
  • The Bruins honored Alumni Night while celebrating the annual Battle of the Boulevard and White Out at the Curb Event Center.

Belmont hits the road next weekend for a pair of matches, beginning Friday, Sept. 25, at Valparaiso at 6 p.m. CT inside the Athletics-Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Indiana. The Bruins then travel to Chicago to face UIC Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. CT inside Credit Union 1 Arena.
