Men’s Soccer Shuts Out University of St. Thomas 3-0 Friday Night in Music City

Bruins Secure Third-Straight Victory, Fourth Consecutive Result at Rose Park

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Three different Bruins found the back of the net and the Belmont University men's soccer team registered its second shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory against the University of St. Thomas Friday night at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville. Converting their first three shots on target, the Bruins (4-4-1) defended 19 total shots and freshman goalkeeper Brody Sucher matched his career high with seven saves.
 
The victory is Belmont's third straight at Rose Park and fourth consecutive result at home.
 
It marks the fourth time this season the Bruins have scored at least three goals in a match.
 
A little over 14 minutes into the contest, freshman defender Zain Abdelhadi fed the ball into fellow freshman defender Judah McCloud on a corner kick. Rising to the occasion, McCloud leaped and finished with his right foot for his first career goal and a 1-0 Belmont lead. Later in the first half in the 35th minute, junior midfielder Emmanual Aranda played a ball to graduate midfielder Elijah John on the high right side. Keeping the ball on the ground, John found fifth-year defender Nate Mefford in the 18-yard box. Notching his team-best fourth goal of the season, Mefford struck the back of the net off his left foot. Sucher came up with six first-half saves before the Bruins limited the Tommies (4-4-2) to only one shot on goal in the second half.
 
In the 54th minute it was senior forward Lucas Wolthers who put an exclamation point on the evening. John delivered a well-placed ball deep into the box from well outside on the right flank as Mefford tracked it down and laid the ball off to Wolthers. In perfect position, Wolthers settled and finished with his right from just outside the six-yard box to make it 3-nil. Belmont finished with 17 shots, including six on target. Six of the Bruins' 10 corner kicks took place in the first half.

  • Friday's match was the first-ever meeting between Belmont and St. Thomas (Minn.).
  • The Bruins' five assists are a season high.
  • With McCloud's goal, 11 different Belmont players have found the back of the net this season.
  • The Bruins have earned a result in 42 of their last 52 matches at Rose Park, outscoring their opponents 77-39 during that stretch.
  • Since the start of the 2018 season, Belmont is 35-16-14 at home.
  • Mefford, the Bruins' active career leader in goals, has seven scores to his name.

The Bruins will have over a week off from match action before beginning Missouri Valley Conference play next Saturday, Oct. 3 at Drake. Kickoff from Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the road conference opener will be broadcast on ESPN+.
