Katelyn (Bishop) Harrison enters her sixth season at the helm of Belmont University Volleyball in 2024.
In 2023, the Bruins earned their first trip to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament since joining the conference. In their conference tournament debut, Belmont secured their first postseason win since 2015 against Valparaiso to advance to the MVC Quaterfinals. The Bruins also collected their first power five win since 2014 and compiled their best record since 2017 during the 2023 campaign.
Harrison helped coach Rachel McBride to a career best 563 dig season and now sits at second for all-time digs in the record book with 1,630. Sophomore Brooke Gilleland had a successful season under Harrison where she collected MVC All-Tournament honors after posting 35 kills and 5.00 kills per set in the conference tournament. Harrison also helped Emily Warmenhoven and Brenna Kauffeld land on the MVC All-Freshman team for the 2023 season.
In 2022, the Bruins earned their first-ever Missouri Valley Conference win, secured their first-ever MVC sweep, had their first three-match conference winning streak since 2018, and took down rival Murray State on the road for the first time since the 2015 OVC Championship match.
Additionally, Belmont took a set off (rv) Washington State on Sept. 2, the first time the Bruins had taken a set from a Power Five opponent since 2018 and just the second time since 2015. Harrison coached middle blocker Kristen Clemons to MVC Player of the Week honors and Tennessee Sports Writers Association honors on Oct. 3, the first conference player of the week award for a Bruin since 2017.
Harrison also helped coach Rachel McBride to a 451-dig season, the most from a Bruin since 2013, and developed Kristen Clemons and Laura Shoopman into the first pair of Bruin teammates since 2015 to each eclipse at least 300 kills in a single season. Shoopman ended the year with 389 kills, the most in the program since 2017.
In 2021, the Bruins earned seven conference wins, their most since 2017, and advanced to their first OVC tournament since 2017. Belmont finished with a winning record at home and took down two of the top four teams in the conference--UT Martin and Murray State--at the Curb Event Center. The win over the Racers on Oct. 30 was the first victory over Murray State since 2015. Belmont also secured their first-ever road victory at SIUE on Oct. 8, a four-set triumph.
Harrison also coached outside hitter Taylor Floyd to her second straight All-OVC Second Team selection in 2021 after Floyd finished in the top-10 in the conference in kills (269) while collecting a career-high 19 service aces. The Louisville, Ky., native became the 13th Bruin in program history to earn All-Conference honors in two different seasons.
Belmont averaged 2.01 blocks per set over the season, the second-highest mark for a Bruins squad since 2005
In the Spring 2021 season, Harrison coached Taylor Floyd to All-OVC Second Team honors after she led the Bruins in nearly every offensive category. Middle blocker Sydney Willis had a breakthrough freshman season, finishing fourth in the OVC in blocks per set (1.00 avg/s).
Harrison came to Belmont after spending five seasons at the College of Charleston as an assistant coach. During her time in the Holy City, the Cougar program enjoyed remarkable success: posting a 115-51 record - including a 60-20 mark in league matches - two conference championships (1 SoCon, 1 CAA), two NCAA Tournament appearances, and a run to the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Final Four.
The 2017 Cougars went 27-6, recorded a top 50 RPI, and earned the first NCAA Volleyball Championship at-large bid in the history of the Colonial Athletic Association.
During Harrison's tenure, College of Charleston defeated seven opponents from Power 5 conferences, including Miami (FL) in the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Championship. She coached 13 All-CAA honorees, two American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans, and the last two Colonial Athletic Association Players of the Year.
Harrison was announced as Belmont's next head coach on Jan. 22, 2019.
"After an extensive national search, I am pleased to announce the hiring of Katelyn Harrison as the next head coach of Belmont volleyball," Director of Athletics Scott Corley said. "Katelyn has a strong pedigree as a top assistant at one of the most consistent and high-achieving programs in the country, as well as invaluable experience as a player at the highest levels of college and the national program. She is an excellent recruiter and technical coach; huge assets for our program on the court. Additionally, Katelyn understands the importance of bringing in young women that will excel in the classroom and the community. I am confident Katelyn can return Belmont volleyball to a championship level, and look forward to working with her."
A native of Terre Haute, Indiana, the former Katelyn Bishop was among the most heralded prep prospects in the nation. She played three years with the United State Girls' Youth National Team, winning the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) championship and finishing fourth in the World Championships.
After being named Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, two-time AAU All-American and Volleyball Magazine 'Fab 50' selection, Harrison went on to a standout career at the University of Southern California. Her Trojan teams earned trips to the NCAA Final Four in 2004 and 2007.
Earning her bachelor's degree in psychology, Harrison later earned a Juris Doctorate from Campbell Law School in May of 2012.
Harrison and her husband, Jordan, have two sons and live in Nashville.
