Box Score DeLAND, Fla.--- Belmont fell in set one and then came back to beat Stetson 3-1 on Friday night. The Bruins moved to 6-2 in conference play and 12-13 on the season with the win.
While a win is always good, Head Coach Deane Webb hopes to see improvement from his squad before taking on Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow.
"We served well tonight but lacked focus in most parts of the match," Webb said. "We played well enough to win, but not well enough to be satisfied with our play."
Belmont was led by junior Maggie Johnson who finished with 19 kills and a .311 hitting percentage. Johnson also added two service aces. Senior Kayla Albritton added 18 kills and three aces on the night. As a team, the Bruins registered 11 service aces. Belmont leads the conference in service aces per set. Freshman Hannah Miranda led the Bruins with 54 assists. Fellow freshman Allison McCoy also had a good night, scoring eight kills and turning in a team high .462 hitting percentage.
"Kayla struggled to start the match, but hit very well the last two sets," Webb said. "Our middles were effective when they were given opportunities. Maggie hit very well from both the front and back row. She worked hard to get herself in position to hit with pace, and the results followed."
The Bruins continue their final road trip of the season against Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow evening when they meet the Eagles for a 6 p.m. match. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. FGCU won the first match-up, 3-2, in the Curb Event Center. Belmont will need strong performances across the board to continue accumulating wins heading into postseason play.
"Florida Gulf Coast lost a very tough one tonight versus Lipscomb," Webb said. "They're now in a position where they have no pressure, and can go out and play hard with no concerns of seeding, building momentum for postseason, or peaking at the right time. Any team in a position to be a spoiler is a dangerous team. They showed that to Lipscomb tonight, and I know they'll be great tomorrow."
