Belmont Falls at the Hands of Indiana

Feb. 28, 2010

Final Stats

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After splitting the first two games of the Southern Mississippi Tournament, the Belmont Bruins (1-8-0) were set to face Big Ten foe Indiana (5-6-0) in the Sunday morning matchup.  Despite looking dangerous early in the game, Belmont could not capitalize on their chances.  Indiana took full advantage of their opportunities to take the victory by a score of 9-0.

The Bruins looked dangerous in the first inning.  Aided by an error and two walks, Belmont was able to load the bases with only one out but where unable to capitalize as Indiana's Monica Wright struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.

Indiana exploited their good fortune by immediately posting five runs of their own off of six hits.  Belmont pitcher Devon Schmidt (Greenbrier, Tenn.), who recorded her first win of the season the day before against Central Arkansas, came on late in the inning to try and slow down the Hoosier offense.

Indiana tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning when the Hoosier's leading batter, Sara Olson, doubled to center field to drive in teammate Breanna Saucedo.

Indiana put the game away in the fourth inning when they turned four singles into three runs to go ahead by nine runs.

In the end, the Bruins were out hit by the Hoosiers 12 to 4.  Belmont freshman Devon Schmidt pitched 3.1 innings with four strikeouts.  Senior Sara Bentley batted two for two from the plate in the game.

The loss leaves Belmont with a 1-2 record in the Southern Mississippi Tournament with one game remaining against the host, Southern Mississippi.  That game will be played later today at 4:30 CDT.
