MURRAY, Ky. - With an 8-6 win
at Murray State on Tuesday afternoon, Belmont extended a
season-opening winning streak to seven games in the first road
competition of the season.
Junior catcher Vinny Casha tied a
career-high in hits after going 3-for-4 from the plate with two
RBI. Nate
Woods also had a three-hit game (3-for-5), scoring two runs and
driving in one. Four other Bruins reported multi-hit games to give
Belmont a total of 16 hits against the Thoroughbreds.
The Bruins used three
underclassmen on the mound as sophomore Garrett Fanchier
(1-0) made his first start of the season to earn the victory.
Freshman Dan
Huenecke came in the sixth inning, holding Murray State
scoreless in two innings while striking out two and allowing just
one hit. Sophomore Matt Hamann closed
the door in the last two innings to earn the save, his first of the
season.
Belmont improves to 7-0 - the
program's best start since beginning the 2004 season with a
nine-game winning streak. The current seven-game winning streak is
tied for the second-longest in the NCAA era, matching a streak in
2002.
At the plate, the Bruins
struck out a season-low three times as the Belmont pitching staff
fanned the Thoroughbreds eight times.
Murray State (4-3) was led by
designated hitter Cunningham who went 2-for-4 with one
RBI.
Belmont returns home tomorrow
to face WKU in a winter weather make-up game at Shelby Park
