Baseball Falls to Murray State 6-5

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont baseball team fell to visiting Murray State 6-5 in a non-conference game held Tuesday afternoon at Nashville's Shelby Park.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the first when Packy Elkins led off with a single and then advanced to third on Derek Hamblen's double. The next batter, Dylan Craig, hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Elkins from third. Hamblen would later advance to third and then score after MSU's Marc Harmon threw two wild pitches during Nate Woods' at-bat to give Belmont the early 2-0 lead.

Murray State would cut the lead to 2-1 in the second when Daniel Hill doubled to left and then later scored on a Tyler Monkman RBI double.

In the third inning, Belmont's Nate Woods hit his ninth homerun of the season over the left field wall to extend the Bruin lead to 3-1.

The Thoroughbreds would take the lead for good in the fourth. After Drew Pixley singled to left, Tyler Monkman reached base on a fielder's choice with Pixley advancing to second. Then, Brandon Elliott doubled to center, scoring Pixley and allowing Monkman to reach third to cut the BU lead to 3-2. Then, Kyle Tiernan hit a two RBI double down the left field line, scoring Elliott and Monkman to give MSU the lead 4-3. Then, Elliot Frey singled to right scoring Tiernan to give Murray the 5-3 lead.

Murray State added a run in the eighth into increase their lead to 6-3. The Bruins would add single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but the rally was not enough as the Thoroughbreds picked up the victory 6-5.

Kyle Tiernan led Murray State as he went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Elliot Frye and Daniel Hill also added 2 hits each for the Thoroughbreds.

Belmont was paced by senior Packy Elkins, who went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jared Breen also added two hits for the Bruins. Alex Love got his third win on the year for the Thoroughbreds, while Matt McGaha picked up his second save of the season. Tyler Graskewicz took the loss for the Bruins.

Belmont (15-11) is back in action this Thursday as they play at Kennesaw State in a single game at 5:00pm CT.
