NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite a
strong start from left-handed pitcher Chase
Brookshire, the Bruins fell to Stetson 3-6 on Friday night at
Shelby Park.
In his first start to begin a
weekend series, Brookshire threw four scoreless innings and allowed
two earned runs. Sophomore Matt Hamann pitched
three innings of relief, allowing no walks and striking out
one.
"I thought that Chase had an
outstanding performance," Head Coach Davis Jarvis said. "The fact
that we only walked one hitter all day, between Chase and Matt, was
a tremendous asset. The most frustrating part is that we pitched
well enough to win today."
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead
with two outs in the second inning as Jared Breen drove a
full count pitch to right field which scored Phillip Parsley
from second. Breen reached a career-high of three hits in three at
bats, also scoring and driving in one run.
After holding the Hatters
scoreless through four innings, three unearned runs in the fifth
inning deflated the Bruins' lead.
Sophomore Dylan Craig helped
the Bruins respond in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI
triple to put BU within one. Junior Matt Zeblo followed
with a sacrifice fly from to drive home Craig to tie the game at
three. With his second double of the season, Craig moves to a tie
for fourth place with Wilson Tucker (2004-07) on Belmont's all-time
triples list with 11.
Stetson answered in similar
fashion with a triple and a sacrifice fly to put two more runs on
the board to take a deciding 5-3 lead.
Jacob deGrom (3-1) lasted 7
2/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out three to receive
the win. Brookshire (4-1) was credited with first loss of the
season after giving up five runs - two earned. Robbie Powell
pitched the ninth inning with one strikeout to hold the Bruins for
the save.
Junior Derek Hamblen went
hitless for the first time since March 13 to end his career-long
hitting streak at 22 games.
Belmont (17-19, 5-8 A-Sun)
drops its 10th game in 12 tries, as Stetson (20-16, 8-2 A-Sun) wins
its eighth consecutive conference game.
"Our primary focus is going
out and doing things the right way," Jarvis said. "Winning is a
byproduct of doing things right, losing is a byproduct of your
opponent doing more things right than you are. All these conference
games and wins are precious. We need to stay focused on game one
tomorrow and move on from there."
The first game of the
doubleheader with Stetson tomorrow begins at 1 p.m. at Shelby
Park.
