Belmont swept at Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Belmont baseball lost to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon 11-3 in the final game of a three-game series at Swanson Stadium.

 

With Sunday's loss the Bruins (19-23, 7-11 A-Sun) were swept for the first time against the A-Sun's current league leader. The Eagles (26-13, 17-4) now lead the series with Belmont, six game to three.

 

Junior Matt Zeblo went 2-for-4 at the plate while junior Derek Hamblen went 2-for-5 with one run scored to account for Belmont's two multi-hit games. Senior Packy Elkins hit his 11th homerun of the season - a two-run shot in the fourth inning.

 

FGCU capped off a weekend of stellar pitching as Pete Woodworth (6-1) started for the Eagles and lasted six innings with seven strikeouts, six hits and three runs. On the weekend FGCU recorded 35 strikeouts.

 

Sophomore Frank Adelman (0-2) made his third start of the week for the Bruins, lasting 3 2/3 inning with four earned runs to receive the loss.

 

Leftfielder Alex Lozada and third baseman Austin Gaines accounted for nine of the Eagles' 11 runs batted in. Lozada was 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBI; Gaines went 2-for-4 with five RBI.

 

Jon Ivie pitched the last 2 1/3 innings for the Bruins and recorded one strikeout and gave up one unearned run.

 

The Bruins return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Knoxville, Tenn., to face Tennessee beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
