NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont returns home from a weekend
tournament to face rival Lipscomb in an early 5 p.m. match on
Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Curb Event Center.
The meeting between Belmont and Lipscomb is the 32nd
all-time between the two programs. The Bruins lead the all-time
series 25-6 and own an 11-2 mark at home. Belmont dominated the
rivalry until last season, when Lipscomb took all three meetings en
route to a spotless Atlantic Sun conference season and conference
tournament crown. The Lady Bisons were picked to finish first by
the conference coaches in the annual preseason poll and boast the
two top players in the conference in Preseason Player of the Year
Jake Pease and current Player of the Week Alex Kelly. At 8-2,
Lipscomb leads the conference so far in 2010 and is coming off a
3-0 sweep of South Carolina in the Gamecock invitational last
weekend, marking the program's first win against a Southeastern
Conference opponent.
Belmont returns to the friendly confines of the Curb Event
Center after a 1-2 outing at the Active Ankle Challenge hosted by
Purdue University. The Bruins opened the tournament with a sweep of
Connecticut before dropping a tough five set match to Duquesne.
Belmont fell to the host Boilermakers in straight sets to close the
tournament on Saturday. The Bruins were led once again by senior Kayla
Albritton, who earned all-tournament honors for the fourth
straight tournament.
Thanks to a new single-round-robin conference schedule, the
Tuesday night meeting with Lipscomb will not count in the Atlantic
Sun standings. The November 9 meeting in Allen Arena will be the
conference match between the two teams. The last meeting between
Belmont and Lipscomb was a 1-3 loss in the Atlantic Sun Conference
Tournament semi-finals in Fort Myers, Fla.
Following the home match with the Lady Bison, the Bruins will
head to Chattanooga for a second meeting with the Lady Mocs in the
Country Inn and Suites Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. The first
serve is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT. Belmont will then face James
Madison in an early morning match on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.,
before finishing the Invitational with a match against Central
Florida at 3:30 p.m.
The next home action for the Bruins is Saturday, Sept. 25, when
they welcome Florida Gulf Coast to kick off the 2010 Atlantic Sun
Conference season.
