Baseball Hosts Tennessee Tech In Non-Conference Action (No Audio)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball comes home today to host Tennessee Tech at 4:00 p.m. after playing its last four contests on the road. The Bruins fell to now second ranked Vanderbilt by a score of 6-2 and then dropped two of three against another SEC opponent Mississippi State this past weekend.

Tennessee Tech has opened 2011 with a record of 1-6. The Golden Eagles most recently picked up one out of three in a home series against Eastern Michigan. Tenn Tech won 7-1 on Friday, before falling 1-5 on Saturday and 8-9 in 11 innings on Sunday. Sophomore Tristan Archer was named Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Easter Michigan on Friday. The starter notched nine strikeouts, while allowing only one unearned run on eight hits in leading the Golden Eagles to their only win of the season. Zach Stephens has been leading Tenn Tech from the plate thus far, recording 13 hits on 26 at bats. The freshman also has three doubles and 12 runs batted in throughout the first seven games.

Tennessee Tech leads the all-time series against Belmont by a count of 29-25. In the first ever meeting between the two teams back in 1963, the Golden Eagles came out on top by a score of 7-3. Since head coach David Jarvis has been at Belmont, the Bruins hold a slight 17-15 advantage in the series. Last season the Tennessee Tech won both contests against Belmont, winning in Cookeville by a score of 15-3 and defeating BU in Nashville 15-5.

The Bruins dropped two of three on the road to Mississippi State this past weekend, but Belmont's 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday was quite impressive. BU received great pitching performances from Chase Brookshire, Josh Davis, and Jon Ivie on their way to a one-run, six-hit combined performance on the mound. After being held scoreless for the entire contest, Belmont took the the lead in the ninth when Dylan Craig hit his first home run of the season. The two run jack was of the inside the park variety as Craig's hit went right over the Mississippi State center fielder's head, and he was able to speed around the bases before the Bulldogs could get the ball back to the plate. Belmont dropped the final two games of the series by scores of 3-5 and 5-14 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Today's contest against Tennessee Tech will be played at Shelby Park in Nashville.  You can follow the game statistics by watching the Live Stats found here.
