NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a midweek non-conference win over Middle Tennessee, Belmont gets back into Atlantic Sun Conference action this weekend with a three game series against Kennesaw State. The Owls come to Nashville for games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after topping the Bruins in two of three out in Kennesaw a year ago. BU is looking to improve upon its 1-2 league mark after taking only one of two against defending champion Mercer last weekend.
Kennesaw State, who was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun in the annual Preseason Coaches' Poll, has started 2011 very successfully. The Owls hold a record of 9-4 and have gotten out to an early 3-0 in the league after sweeping Campbell at home last weekend. Most recently, Kennesaw State went toe to toe with #2 ranked Vanderbilt, falling by a score of 9-5 on Wednesday. The Owls are led at the plate by last week's A-Sun Player of the Week Ronnie Freeman. The sophomore catcher is currently batting .413 with three doubles, 10 RBI and 11 walks. KSU's Josh Carr, who is projected to start game one of the series on Friday, holds a 1.62 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.
Kennesaw State holds a 10-5 advantage in the all-time series against Belmont. The Owls have taken two of three from the Bruins in every series the two squads have played against each other since they first met back in 2006. Last year, KSU topped Belmont in Kennesaw, Ga. by scores of 14-3 and 8-7 before BU took game three of the series by a score of 15-9.
Senior Tim Egerton (Smyrna, Tenn.) increased his team-leading double total for 2011 to six with three two-base knocks in Belmont's 11-3 victory over Middle Tennessee on March 8. The right-fielder went three for four on the day with three doubles and an RBI against the Blue Raiders. Egerton also leads the Bruins with nine RBI, and has recorded an early slugging percentage of .426.
