Baseball Hosts Ball State For Three Games This Weekend

NASVHILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont baseball team (8-10, 3-3) will welcome in Ball State (2-13, 0-0) to Shelby Park this weekend for a three game non-conference series.  The Bruins are coming off of a big 13-6 victory over Big Ten Conference opponent Purdue on Wednesday.

This weekend's games will be Belmont's 11th, 12th, and 13th straight at home.  The home stand will end with another non-conference tilt next Tuesday as the Bruins host Ouachita Baptist at 4:00 p.m.

Ball State and first year head coach Alex Marconi are off to a rough start in 2011.  The Cardinals come to Nashville with a record of 2-13 and have yet to play a conference game in the MAC.  Ball State picked up its second win in its most recent series against Charlotte this past weekend.

Mitch Widau leads the Cardinals as the only player batting above .300 on the season.  The junior has a mark of .381 at the plate with three doubles, eight runs scored, and nine runs batted in.  Cal Bowling, who will start Friday's tilt against Belmont sophomore Chase Brookshire (Chattanooga, Tenn.), is 1-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.57.  The junior right-hander has 16 strikeouts and eight walks in 21.0 innings pitched.

Ball State and Belmont have met only three times in the all-time series, with the Bruins coming out on top in each contest.  No game between the two squads has been won by more than three runs, with the first and most recent meeting each being won by a single run.
