NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont baseball (12-13, 3-6) team will attempt to even the season series with Western Kentucky (16-8, 5-1), taking on the Hilltoppers Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Bolwing Green, Ky.
Western Kentucky welcomes in Belmont to Denes Field, holding a record of 16-8 and a mark of 5-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Hilltoppers most recently fell to #23 Louisville on the road by a score of 3-1. Earlier this year, WKU defeated Belmont by a score of 11-6 at Shelby Park in Nashville. Jared Andreoli leads Western Kentucky at the plate with a batting average of .410. He also has 22 RBI and is one of seven Hilltoppers with two home runs in 2011. Rye Davis, who is projected to start against Belmont's Garrett Fanchier (Lebanon, Tenn.) on Wednesday, is 1-2 with an ERA of 6.60 in 15.0 innings pitched.
Belmont trails Western Kentucky by a mark of 9-12 in the all-time series. In the first ever meeting between the two teams back in 1954, the Hilltoppers came out on top by a score of 8-7. Last season, WKU defeated Belmont twice, and took this year's first contest, defeating the Bruins 11-6 here in Nashville.
With his ninth double of the season against North Florida on Sunday, senior Derek Hamblen (Plano, Texas) became the all-time doubles leader in Belmont history. Hamblen now has 63 in his career passing former Bruin starWilson Tucker, who accumulated 62 doubles from 2004 to 2007. Hamblen is also among the top career performers in runs (168, 2nd) and hits (245, 3rd).
