Box Score 2 CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (5-6-1, 1-2-1 OVC) was unable to battle back from an early deficit on the road at in-state rival Austin Peay (6-7, 2-2 OVC) on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins were held off 3-0, marking only the second time this season an opponent has been able to score more than two goals against BU. With the loss, BU slips to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in its first season in the OVC.
The Govs found the back of the net twice barely five minutes into the first half of action. The Bruins worked to cut into the lead but were unsuccessful despite scoring attempts by sophomore Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) and Rachel Schmidt (Dallas, Texas). APSU went on to tally its third goal in the 21st minute of the half and then leaned on its defensive line to carry the lead into the break.
BU opened the second half aggresively with sophomore Allie Hicks (Carmel, Ind.) and Smith firing shots on goal in the first five minutes. However, the Govs remained solid defensively and did not let up. Junior Katie Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) attempted a stunning header in the 63rd minute to finally get the Bruins on the board however her shot was halted at the post. Despite several more attempts, Belmont was unable to get past the APSU goalkeeper and went on to fall, 3-0.
Austin Peay held the advantage in shots, 13-10, and corner kicks, 2-1.
Smith led the Bruins with three shots, followed by senior Lauren Paynter (Danville, Ky.) and Proud, who each recorded two.
Junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) collected two saves on the day.
Belmont continues its four game road stretch next weekend. The Bruins travel to Jacksonville State on Friday night and take on in-state rival Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon.
