NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont baseball team is set to play four games at Rose Park this weekend, beginning with No. 24 Oregon on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. The Bruins will then host Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday, Bradley on Saturday, and UALR once again on Sunday.
Oregon comes to Nashville ranked or receiving votes in a number of national polls. The Ducks opened the 2012 season defeating Hawaii in three out of four games in Honolulu. Oregon dropped its season opener but then topped the Rainbows in the three straight tilts, scoring 26 runs in the final two contests of the weekend.
Arkansas-Little Rock opened up the 2012 season in fine fashion, sweeping Arkansas-Pine Bluff in three games this past weekend. The Trojans outscored UAPB 36-6 over the weekend and recorded six home runs. UALR will host Louisiana Tech on Wednesday before coming to Nashville to play Belmont and Bradley.
Bradley has had the most difficult start to the season of Belmont's three opponents this weekend. The Braves come to Nashville with a record of 1-2 after dropping a pair of neutral site games to Virginia Tech, and topping Kennesaw State 4-3. The win over the Owls is a good measure for the Bruins, who were picked just below Kennesaw State in the ASun Preseason Poll.
The Bruins' 2-0 win over Evansville marked the first shutout for Belmont to open the season since topping Tennessee Tech 9-0 to start the 2005 campaign. The six runs allowed by Belmont during opening weekend was the least amount of runs given up by a Bruin squad over the first three games of a season since 1999. Belmont defeated Bellarmine twice at home and won at Vanderbilt while allowing only four runs during the stretch.
