CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Belmont (1-11) fell in a closely contested game to Valparaiso, 2-4, in the final game of the UTC Frost Classic.
The Bruins amassed seven hits on the day, bouncing back from their hitting struggles on Saturday, but still continued to struggle offensively, managing only two runs. The Bruins stranded six baserunners and committed one error. Belmont scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Valparaiso lead to 3-1. The Bruins added another run in the bottom of the fifth to get within one of Valpo, but surrendered a run in the top of the sixth and were unable to score again, ultimately falling 2-4. Belmont was led by senior Hannah Irwin, one the Bruins' most consistent offensive performer this weekend, with two hits in four at bats in the game. Irwin was one of six Bruins to record a hit in the game. Freshman Kat Holingsworth batted in one run as a pinch hitter while fellow freshman Heather Turner, who also enjoyed a successful offensive weekend for Belmont, added the team's other RBI with her first career home run.
Belmont will be back in action next weekend as the team travels to Oxford, MS for the second time this season. The Bruins will take part in the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic, facing Troy, Ole Miss and Chattanooga.
