JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Belmont volleyball (9-13, 2-3) snapped a two game skid with a sweep over Jacksonville State Friday night.
Despite an early deficit, Belmont took the opening set from Jacksonville State, 26-24. JSU jumped out to an early lead, but behind kills from seniors Allison McCoy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Jen Myer (New Braunfels, Tx.) the Bruins brought the set within one point, 10-9. A kill from junior Alex Martin (Ooltewah, Tenn.) sparked an 8-1 run to put Belmont ahead, 19-14.
The Gamecocks responded with their own 5-1 run to pull within two points, 21-19. JSU came back to score two straight points to tie the set at 24-24, but a kill from junior Scarlet Gable (Munford, Tenn.) and a JSU attack error ended the set, 26-24.
In the second set, the Bruins took control going out to a 18-11 lead over JSU. A pair of JSU attack errors sparked a 4-1 run for Belmont to extend its lead, 22-13. Freshman Jessica Vestal's (Concord, Calif.) kill gave the Bruins a 23-14 lead before the Gamecocks responded with two straight points.
A kill from McCoy and another JSU attack error closed the set, 25-16, giving Belmont a 2-0 advantage at the break.
The Gamecocks got on the board first after the break, with both teams exchanging points. With the set tied at 14, sophomore Jocelyn Youngdahl (Stillwater, Minn.) sparked four straight points for Belmont, as they took at 18-14 lead. JSU responded with a short run, but the Bruins silenced their run.
Jacksonville State remained close, but kills from Myer and senior setter Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) ended the set, 25-22.
McCoy led Belmont with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage. Myer paced the defense with 24 digs, while Miranda dished out 37 assists.
Belmont returns to action tomorrow at Tennessee Tech. The match is scheduled for 2:00pm.
