Box Score RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (5-8-2, 3-4-1 OVC) used a huge come from behind effort to win in overtime on the road at Eastern Kentucky (4-11-2, 3-4-1 OVC) on Friday afternoon.
EKU found the back of the net first with a shot high into the left corner of the net over senior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) in the 31st minute. Belmont continued to lean on it's never give up attitude to carry it through the remainder of the half. In one of Belmont's best chances to knot the score late in the first half, sophomore Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) just narrowly missed on a shot that flew left of the net with under seven minutes remaining on the clock. BU continued strong play on both sides of the ball down the stretch to go into the break, with Eastern Kentucky holding a one goal advantage.
Belmont wasted little time in the second stanza, hustling on both sides of the ball on the lookout for a scoring opportunity. After a pair of near misses, senior Katie Proud (Knxoville, Tenn.) was able to find the back of the net at the 50:41 mark. Energized by the equalizer goal, the Bruins worked even harder to thwart all Colonel attempts while building momentum down the stretch with a trio of corner kicks. However, the teams would remain locked in the 1-1 stalemate through regulation.
In the extra period, only three minutes elapsed before the Bruins began attack the goal in their diligent hunt for the gamewinner. Junior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Sydney Omweg (Yorktown, Va.) notched back-to-back shots that sailed just wide. Howeverm their hard work paid off as the Bruins were awarded a corner kick, which was taken by sophomore Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.), which curved and smacked into the crossbar. Right below the bar in perfect position was junior Meredith Martin (Franklin, Tenn.) who rebounded the ball to Omweg who swiftly snuck it into the bottom left corner to give BU the 2-1 win.
Belmont held the advantage in shots, 14-7. The teams were even in corner kicks with four apiece.
Smith led BU with three shots, followed by Proud, Omweg and junior Allie Hicks (Carmel, Ind.) with two each.
Berner collected two saves during the match.
