COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Despite an offensive explosion early in the final matchup of this weekend's three-game series, the Belmont softball team (13-25, 3-13 OVC) was unable to hold on and fell on the road at Tennessee Tech on Sunday. The Golden Eagles were able to rally late and take the contest, 7-4.
The Bruins' bats got hot in the top of the second inning, putting four runs over the plate. Sophomore Kat Hollingsworth (Carrollton, Texas) singled before back-to-back errors by TTU helped load the bases with juniors Mia Vierra (Palmdale, Calif.) and Ashley Hammer (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). A double by rookie Jessica Wilson (Alvin, Texas) netted two RBI and a hit by freshman Jordan Daly (Humble, Texas) added to BU's RBI tally to put the team on top, 4-0.
TTU fired back in the bottom of the same inning, tallying four runs to match BU's. The Golden Eagles broke the 4-4 stalemate in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two more runs and added one more in the bottom of the sixth to pull away 7-4. Belmont recorded four more hits over the final four innings but was unable to get another run over the plate.
For the day, Hollingsworth and Heather Turner (Rosenburg, Texas) each batted .500, both going 2-for-4.
A trio of Bruins saw action inside the circle with junior Mia Vierra (Palmdale, Calif.) leading with 3.1 innings tossed. Freshman Taylor Moon (Vestavia, Ala.) and junior Brittanie Albright (Franklin, Tenn.) saw time as well.
Belmont returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 with a non-conference matchup at Western Kentucky. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. Live stats will be available.
