NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team posted their second win of the season as they defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-1 in a non-conference match played Friday at Nashville's Centennial Sportsplex.
The Bruins picked up the first point of the match as they won the doubles point. After winning number three by default, BU clinched the point as freshman Laura Van Eeckhoudt and sophomore Kendall Warren beat Alena Gizdic and Antea Dedic 6-2.
In singles, Belmont cruised to the match victory as they posted wins in five of the six matches. After winning by default at number six, BU went up 3-0 when freshman Abbie Mather beat Franki Jecker 6-1, 6-1. Then, at number one, Laura Van Eeckhoudt clinched the Bruin victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Angelica Sepulveda. Finally, Belmont notched two more wins at positions four and five to seal the 6-1 match win over the visiting Bulldogs. Senior Nikki Maciel won at number three over Antea Dedic 6-3, 6-4, while sophomore Ann Lauren Fiepke defeated Tais Bezerra in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 at number five.
The lone Cumberland win came at number two as Alena Gidzic beat Kendall Warren 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
Belmont (2-3) is now off until March 15 when they host Southeast Missouri to open conference play.
