NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's basketball team (14-16) faces off against top-seeded UT Martin (23-7) in the finals of the 2014 OVC Tournament on Saturday.
No. 1 UT Martin entered the OVC Tournament with a double-bye after going 15-1 in league play and 22-7 overall.
UTM is led in scoring by the duo of Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome, who are averaging 24.1 and 19.2 points per outing, respectively. Ashia Jones leads the team in rebounds, grabbing 6.3 per contest.
Belmont holds the all-time series advantage 16-6, but UT Martin won the only meeting between the teams this season in Martin, 82-53.
The Bruins advance to their first conference tournament final since 2007, when they went on to win the Atlantic Sun title and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, after knocking off No. 6 Jacksonville State in the semifinals on Friday. Belmont was led in scoring by junior Katie Carroll (Lilburn, Ga.), who scored a career-high 23 points and matched her career-best from behind the arc with five. Classmate Jordyn Luffman (Lawrenceburg, Tenn.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Lauren Thompson (Franklin, Tenn.) dropped in 10 points and notched a game-high two blocks. Junior Taylor Mills (Corryton, Tenn.) collected six assists while classmate Adrienne Tarrence (Bowling Green, Ky.) collected a game-high two steals.
Saturday's contest is set to tip at 1p.m. at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium. The contest can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network and ESPN3.
