Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Belmont women's basketball team extended their winning streak to five as they defeated Wake Forest 78-64 Sunday afternoon at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Wiinston-Salem, North Carolina.
The win marked the first win for the Bruins over an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team since they beat Clemson during the 2005-06 season.
The Bruins had a great start to the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on two baskets by Lauren Thompson and a three-pointer by Sierra Jones. They increased their lead to 10 at 13-3 when Lauren Thompson hit another jumper. A layup by Sierra Jones with five minutes left gave Belmont their biggest lead at 17-5. Wake cut the lead to six at 21-15 with 1:39 left on Keyonna Allen layup, but a Sierra Jones three-pointer with 1:07 left allowed BU to end the period with a nine point lead at 24-15.
In the second stanza, BU continued their solid play as they increased their lead to 13 on three different occasions, the last at 2:50 left on Jenny Roy's layup to make it 37-24. However, the Demon Deacons would score the last eight points of the half to cut the Bruins lead to 37-32 at the break.
The third period started with the Bruins increasing their lead to 10 on several occasions. After both teams traded baskets for several minutes, Wake cut the Belmont lead to nine at 53-44 on an Amber Campbell layup with 1:53 left. However, BU ended the period on an 8-0 run keyed by a three-pointer and layup by freshman Ellie Harmeyer to finish with a 61-44 lead.
Belmont maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter, stretching it to as many as 22 points (75-53) with 2:58 to play after Sally McCabe's layup. Wake scored eight of the last ten points of the game, but the Bruins finished the game on top 78-64.
The Bruins (7-1) had five players in double figures, led by junior Lauren Thompson's 14 points. Darby Maggard had 12, while Sierra Jones and Ellie Harmeyer each added 12. Sophomore Sally McCabe had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
For the game, BU shot 45 percent from the field, including 50 percent from behind the three-point arc. They also outrebounded the Demon Deacons 47-38.
Wake Forest (5-3) had three players in double figures led by Milan Quinn's 12 points.
The women's basketball team returns to action this Tuesday as they host Trevecca starting at 6:00pm in the Curb Event Center. The game will be broadcasted on the OVC Digital Network.
