COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont softball dropped the series opening contest to Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles used a big sixth inning to shutout the Bruins, 7-0.
Through the first five innings of play, BU found itself trailing by only a pair of runs as the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 advantage heading into the top of the sixth.
BU used a pair of walks and a single down the left field line from Jessica Wilson (Humble, Tex.) as the Bruins loaded the bases with a pair of outs. The Golden Eagles escaped the inning, however, as a groundout from Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.) ended the inning as the Bruins failed to light up the scoreboard.
TTU (18-14, 5-3 OVC) added to its lead in the home half of the inning off a pair of big swings as centerfielder Angi Sakamoto drove in a pair of runs on a double to left field and rightfielder Olivia Bennett followed with a three-run blast to centerfield. In total the Golden Eagles plated five runs off four hits in order to take a 7-0 advantage heading into the seventh inning.
The Bruins went three up, three down in the the seventh as the Golden Eagles took the series opener, 7-0.
The Bruins could only muster four hits on the afternoon as sophomore Kayla Wells (Bonney Lake, Wash.) led BU at the plate, going 2-for-3 on the contest.
Belmont (8-18, 3-4 OVC) will wrap the series on Sunday as the two teams are set to play a doubleheader at the Tech Softball Field starting at 1 p.m. CT.
