Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala.—Despite a three run effort in the ninth to try and regain a lead, the Bruins fell in game one against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 8-6 at Rudy Abbott Field on Friday.
Starting on the mound for the Bruins was Senior Dan Ludwig (Naperville, Ill.) In 6 innings of work the lefty struck out 5 batters and walked none. He allowed 6 earned runs on 13 hits.
The Bruins placed their first run on the board in the top of the first thanks to a single to right center from Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.). His single plated Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) who had reached earlier in the inning due to a hit by pitch.
After being held to four scoreless innings the Bruins scored a run apiece in the fifth and six innings. The Bruins tack on a run in the fifth with two runners reaching base due to hit by pitch. Runners advanced and a one out ground out plated a run. In the sixth Egli led off the inning and hit a solo home run over the center field fence.
Alex Ward (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) came into the game in relief for Ludwig and pitched two solid innings for the Bruins holding Jacksonville State to two scoreless innings and struck out one.
Despite to scoreless innings, the Bruins returned to the plate in the ninth determined to close the Gamecocks lead. Ferguson led off the inning with a double to right center and Beaty followed with a double of his own to right center to score Ferguson. Egli stepped up to the plate with one out and delivered with a two run bomb to left center bringing the game within two runs. Two more Bruins faced the plate but were unable to reach base.
The Bruins now 21-19 overall and 10-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference return to Rudy Abbott Field to face the Gamecocks in game two of the series.
