NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University volleyball team opens up the 2015 home campaign this weekend with the Bruiser Showcase.
The Bruins will face South Alabama and UTEP on Friday, September 4 and 12:30pm and 6:00pm central time. The Bruins will close out the season against Memphis on Saturday, September 5 at 2:00pm central time.
"We are a team of fierce competitors and no matter whom or where we are playing, we are always going to leave it all on the court," said Senior Regan Kennamer (Huntsville, Ala.).
In the first match of the weekend the Bruins will face the University of South Alabama. The Jaguars finished their first weekend of action with a record of 1-2 at the Boston College Invitational. USA dropped the first two matches to Boston College and Providence with a 3-1 decision. The team came back Saturday and rallied to win a five set match against Sacred Heart. Redshirt junior middle blocker Nikki Gittens was selected to the all-tournament team for the third time in her career.
The final match of Friday will be the Bruins versus the University of Texas at El Paso. UTEP finished its opening weekend with a 1-2 record at the TCU tournament. After defeating Abilene Christian in the first match of the weekend 3-1, the miners fell to SMU 1-3 and to TCU 0-3 to close out the weekend. Junior setter Lindsey Larson recorded three consecutive double-doubles and was named to the all-tournament team.
Belmont comes back Saturday to close out the weekend with a match against the University of Memphis. In their opening weekend Memphis recorded a 2-1 record at the Georgia Benson Hospitality Invitational. The Tigers swept the first two matches of the weekend against High Point and Wofford to make it to the championship match versus Georgia. Memphis fell to Georgia 3-0 in this match. Senior setter Veronica Zimmerman and sophomore outside hitter Oluchi Agomuo were both named to the all-tournament team.
"The team is very excited to be playing in the Curb this weekend," said Redshirt Sophomore Emma Price (Fort Mill, S.C.). "We have been preparing all week for yet another challenging weekend. We have grown and learned a lot since last weekend and I can't wait to see the fire and enthusiasm that we bee on the court Friday!"
Amongst the excitement of the tournament this weekend there will be a few fun promotional events happening for attendees of the Belmont matches.
At the 12:30pm match Friday against South Alabama there will be a serving for swag event at intermission in which fans serve volleyballs for a chance to win shirts and coupons!
At the 6:00pm match Friday against UTEP there will be a pre-game party at 5:00pm with FREE BBQ and a live DJ. This is also a CODE BLUE night so all fans should wear their Belmont blue and the first 100 students to visit the game day table will receive a FREE t-shirt!
At the 2:00pm match Saturday against Memphis there will be a ring of fire intermission game. Six fans will serve LED volleyballs in the dark, aiming for glow in the dark rings to win prizes!
