NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Not much could be done to stop the long hitting ladies on Belmont Softball (7-16) as they concluded their home opening weekend with another pair of victories. The Bruins did not allow a single run to score by visiting Alabama State (8-18) on Saturday, picking up 1-0 and 8-0 wins. The effort extends BU's win streak to four games.
Game one saw BU silence the Lady Hornets bats for all seven innings. In the bottom of the fourth, a single by Amy Zeronian sent Jordan Daly over the plate who had notched a triple in her turn at the plate. It would be the lone run of the contest to help Belmont record its second consecutive shutout.
Game two looked more like a home run derby than regulation game. Senior Jess Wilson smashed a two-run homer over the left fence in the bottom of the first and the Bruins never looked back. Jess Andree repeated the feat in the bottom of the second inning, sending the ball over the fence at almost the exact same spot as the previous one. Zeronian followed suit with her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, putting Belmont on top, 6-0.
The Lady Hornets managed to keep the Bruin bats quiet for one half inning before the scoring onslaught continued. In the bottom of the fifth, Belmont would add two more to complete the sweep of games.
For the series, Jess Wilson and Kayla Wells both went 3-for-6 at the plate. Wilson finished with three runs while Jordan Daly collected two. Zeronian finished with three RBI.
Inside the circle, seniors Shelby Willard and Carolyn Snodgress picked up wins. Snodgress tallied her first shutout and complete game of the season with one strikeout. Lexi Rouse also saw time in the circle in relief, notching three strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action at E.S. Rose Park on Wednesday, hosting in-state rival Memphis for a single game beginning at 4 p.m. The dual can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network and live stats will be available.
