NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A bouncy single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning snatched a win away from Belmont Softball (7-21) on Wednesday afternoon. The Bruins were edged at the end of regulation in the Battle of the Boulevard by Lipscomb (16-14), 4-3.
The Bruins were able to jump on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. Junior Kayla Wells (Bonney Lake, Wash.) reached first base after being hit by a pitch and a wild pitch moved her to second. Freshman Baylee Cook reached on a walk before redshirt sophomore Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) knocked a three run home run over the left fence to put BU on top, 3-0. The Lady Bisons answered back in the bottom of the second, picking up a pair of runs.
BU held off an early surge by the Lady Bisons to maintain a 3-2 advantage for the majority of the game. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Lipscomb waged a massive comeback effort. Using a shot up the middle, LU went on to score the gamewinner and take the game, 4-3.
Freshman Ashley Johnson (Kingwood, Texas) and Rouse both saw action inside the circle and combined for six strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, March 25 with its first OVC contests on the road. The Bruins head to Southeast Missouri State for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available.
