NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Another late inning offensive explosion opened the door for a Belmont Softball win on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins (12-23, 5-5 OVC) rallied to defeat Tennessee Tech (12-22, 3-7 OVC), 4-1, at Rose Park. It marked the first time since joining the OVC, BU picked up a three-game series sweep and only the second time in program history.
After two quiet innings to start, the Golden Eagles put one run over the plate in the top of the third. TTU was able to hold on to the 1-0 advantage for the next two innings despite surges from the Bruins. Belmont began to rally in the top of the sixth turning a dramatic double play that helped end the inning.
In BU's half of the sixth, not even a pitching change could stop the hot bats. Junior Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.) got things started with a double up the middle and classmate Amy Zeronian (Pasadena, Calif.) reached on four balls. A TTU fielding error helped freshman Jordan Spicer (Hendersonville, Tenn.) load the bases before senior Jordan Daly (Humble, Texas) smashed a double to the left fence to put Belmont ahead, 2-1.
Back-to-back singles by junior Kayla Wells (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and freshman Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) scored two more runs and forced a pitching change for Tennessee Tech. However, the damage had already been done as Belmont had pulled away, 4-1, by the end of the sixth. The Golden Eagles made one last gasp in the top of the seventh with a double but the Bruins defense left her stranded and secured the victory by the same score.
For the day, Daly and redshirt sophomore Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) went 2-for-3. Daly also led the team with two RBI.
Inside the circle, senior Taylor Moon (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) and Rouse split time. The duo combined for four strikeouts in the win.
Belmont returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 at Rose Park. The Bruins host former conference rival Kennesaw State for a single game beginning at 5 p.m.
