Down to the Wire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A tremendous back-and-forth battle defined the season opener for Belmont Women's Tennis on Friday at the Centennial Sportsplex.  The Bruins (0-1) were edged, 4-3, after battling down to the wire in a thrilling match against visiting Central Arkansas (1-0).

BU narrowly missed clenching the doubles point before the battle in the singles began.  Newcomer Laura Kent (Kangaroo Valley, Australia) won at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-4.  The Sugar Bears picked up wins in spots 2-4 before senior Abbie Mather (Louisville, Ky.) and junior Suzanna Stapler (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up victories at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

The Bruins return to action on Sunday with a stop at MTSU.  Match time is set for 4 p.m.  Live stats will be available.
