BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team blanked Cumberland (Tenn.) 7-0 in a non-conference match held indoors Friday evening at Brentwood Swim and Tennis Club in Brentwood, Tennessee.
The Bruins earned the first point of the match as they took two of the three doubles matches. At position one, seniors Kendall Warren and Lindsey Whitehead beat Ainhoa Garrido and Franki Jecker 7-5. Then at three, junior Suzanna Stapler and sophomore Mical Johnson outlasted Jasmine Shankar and Beleri Salazar 6-4.
In singles, Belmont swept all six matches to clinch the 7-0 victory over the Phoenix. At one, senior Laura Kent won in three sets over Garrido 4-6, 7-5, and 10-3. Whitehead posted a win at two in straight sets over Marta Ferrando 6-1, 6-3. At position three, Van Eeckhoudt beat Shankar 6-1, 6-3. Warren swept Jecker at four 6-3, 6-3. Then at five, Stapler defeated Salazar 6-1, 6-2, while at six, senior Maddie Gilley outlasted Sarah Edwards in three sets: 3-6, 6-3, and 10-2.
The women's tennis team (2-7) is back in action next Friday, March 3 as they host Dayton at 2:00pm at Centennial Sportsplex.
