NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A strong effort fell just shy on Friday evening for Belmont Women's Tennis. The Bruins (0-5) were held off, 5-2, by in-state rival Chattanooga (4-2) on their home courts at Centennial Sportsplex.
BU started strong in the duel, taking the doubles point. The Mocs won at No. 1 before the Bruins rallied to take the point. At No. 2, seniors Laura Kent (Kangaroo Valley, Australia) and Laura Van Eeckhoudt (Overijse, Belgium) battled to a 7-5 win while at No. 3 the senior duo of Abbie Mather (Louisville, Ky.) and Maddie Gilley (Aurora, Ohio) pushed to a 6-3 victory.
Chattanooga took control on the singles side, grabbing wins at Nos. 1 through 4 and at No. 6. Mather notched the lone win for BU in singles at No. 5, picking up a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
"Another hard fought match against a very good team," noted Head Coach Mark Srouji. "We played hard but just fell short in a few of the singles matches."
Belmont returns to action on Friday, February 10 at Centennial Sportsplex. The Bruins host North Alabama beginning at 3 p.m.
