CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. -- Belmont Women's Tennis saw another close outing on Sunday afternoon as it concluded its conference road trip. The Bruins (3-12, 1-3 OVC) were edged on the road at Southeast Missouri State (10-4, 2-1 OVC), 4-3.
The Redhawks won at No. 1 doubles but the Bruin duo of seniors Abbie Mather (Louisville, Ky.) and Maddie Gilley (Aurora, Ohio) won at No. 3, 6-2. Unfortunately, SEMO was able to pull out the win at No. 2 to take the doubles point.
For a second consecutive match, senior Laura Kent (Kangaroo Valley, Australia) was pushed into an extra set before she came away with the win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Notching straight set victories were seniors Kendall Warren (New Braunfels, Texas) and Mather, at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. However, Belmont fell just one shy of toppling the Redhawks, going on to be edged, 4-3.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, March 31. The Bruins host Eastern Illinois for an OVC dual match at Centennial Sportsplex. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
