NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Even with several rebound opportunities, Belmont Women's Tennis was unable to take down visiting Eastern Illinois on Friday at Centennial Sportsplex. The Bruins (3-13, 1-4 OVC) fell to the Panthers (10-6, 2-2 OVC), 5-2, slipping to 1-4 in conference play.
The doubles point belonged to EIU after it picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 2. The duel at No. 3 between seniors Abbie Mather (Louisville, Ky.) and Maddie Gilley (Aurora, Ohio) and Emily Pugachevsky and Srishti Slaria was halted unfinished, knotted 4-4.
In singles action, Belmont was finally able to pick up some crucial points. Senior Kendall Warren (New Braunfels, Texas )and Mather, at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, won their matches in straight sets. Senior Laura Kent (Kangaroo Valley, Australia) had her hands full at No. 1. After taking the first set 6-3, she was edged 7-6 in the second before falling in the tiebreaker, 10-5.
Belmont returns to action on Saturday, April 1 at Centennial Sportsplex. The Bruins host SIUE beginning at 10 a.m.
