SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Belmont Men's Tennis team (4-6) closed their weekend road swing with a loss to Wofford (6-1) on Sunday. After a very dramatic match, the Bruins were unable to pull out the win, falling in the final singles duel of the day.
The Bruins fell behind early, dropping the first point of the match in doubles play.
To open singles play, Omar Williams held off freshman David Faulkner at No . 6. However, the Bruins were able to match the total score at 2-2, as sophomore Vincent Sterkens at No. 3 and senior Stephen Goldman at No. 4 won their singles matches in two sets. Sterkens defeated Edu Villar, 6-2, 6-3, and Goldman knocked off Parks Schoen, 6-2, 6-4.
The momentum of knotting the score with Wofford was short lived, as freshman battled into three sets but was held off, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In order to keep the chances of winning alive, sophomore Hendrik Inno at No. 1 had to gain a victory in a third set against Lucas Cerebella, and he delivered. Inno won the tie-breaker set and helped Belmont tie Wofford once again at 3-3.
The match came down to the final result of the match between freshman Jake Briggs and Kyle Barr at No. 5. Briggs won the first set 6-2, but then Kyle Barr won the second set 6-4. After a tough third set, however, Briggs was unable to catch up, as Barr defeated Briggs in the final set, 6-4.
The Bruins return to Nashville for their next match at Lipscomb in the annual Battle of the Boulevard contest. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
