Nashville, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's tennis stayed on a roll Saturday, earning a pair of convincing non-conference victories.
The Bruins first defeated Alabama A&M 7-0, and then beat Saint Louis University 4-0.
"Today was probably one of our best performances of the year as a team," head coach Mauricio Antun said. "We came out strong on both matches, and we were very disciplined and focused from the beginning until the end. I am very pleased with how we competed throughout the board, and I hope that we can keep this momentum going next weekend against Eastern Illinois."
Belmont was clicking in every aspect of this match.
In singles play, every player in the top four courts was able to win in two sets and in very dominating fashion. Hendrik Inno won his match 6-0, 6-1 at court 1, Marko Ilic won by the same score at court 2, Zak Khan won his match 6-1, 6-1 at court 3, and Stephen Goldman won his match 6-0, 6-3 at court 4.
The players on court 5 and 6 only played in 1 first to eight games set, but both were able to pull through and win their matches. David Faulkner on court 5 had to play through a tie breaker but was able to win his match 8-7(5). Jake Briggs on court 6 was able to breeze through his match by winning 8-1.
In a much shorter match that did not include doubles play, the Bruins were able to win all of their matches, but had to work harder to do so.
Jake Briggs also won in two sets but had to play in a tiebreaker in the second set.
Zak Khan had to grind out three sets before winning his match against Juan Calero. He won his first set 6-3 but then lost the second set 5-7. Khan was then able to regain his composer and finished the match by winning the final set 6-1.
Belmont (8-10) returns to action Friday, March 30 at Eastern Illinois. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT.
