NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team picked up their first OVC win of the season as they defeated Southeast Missouri 5-2 in match played indoors Saturday afternoon at the Ensworth Tennis Center in Nashville.
The Bruins took the early 1-0 lead as they captured the doubles point. At number two, the freshman duo of Maria Plaksina and Terra Sheldon defeated Alessandra Maya Thompson and Maja Lundell 6-2. Then at number three, junior Mical Johnson and freshman Sarah Brackin beat Anais Emelie and Kelly Sicha 6-4. The match at number one was unfinished since the doubles point had been determined.
In singles, both teams went toe to toe as three of the matches went three sets. The Redhawks tied the match at 1-1 as Kseniya Zonova beat Drew Hawkins at the number two position. Belmont took back the lead as Sheldon swept Kelly Sicha 6-2, 6-2 at number five.
Southeast Missouri tied the match at 2-2 when Maja Lundell defeated freshman Nikki Christiansen 6-3, 6-3.
However, the Bruins stormed back and clinched the victory with a trio of three set wins. At number three, freshman Erin Allen outlasted Maya Thompson 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Then, Plaksina came back from a set down to defeat Oleksandra Doroshenko 2-6, 7-5, and 6-2. Finally, Brackin closed out the BU victory with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win over Emelie.
The women's tennis team will be back in action next Friday as they play at Eastern Illinois.
