NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The streaking Belmont Men's Tennis team (11-10, 4-0 OVC) remained hot Wednesday, as it handily defeated crosstown rival Tennessee State (10-10, 0-3), 7-0, extending its winning streak to six consecutive matches.
BU gave a truly remarkable performance against the Tigers. Not only did they shutout their in-town OVC rivals, but most impressively, the Bruins did it without losing a single set throughout the match.
"Today was a good way to start the week," said head coach Mauricio Antun. "We played well overall and that win puts us in a spot to compete for the OVC title. We have our toughest opponents this coming weekend, and we are hungry to win it. We invite all the fans, and any support is greatly appreciated."
Belmont's doubles game was on point, as the tandem of sophomore Hendrik Inno (Tallinn, Estonia) and freshman Marko Ilić (Zagreb, Croatia) won their match against Stefan Koruga and Pavle Popovic at No. 1, 6-1, while at No. 3 sophomore Vincent Sterkens (Antwerp, Belgium) and freshman David Faulkner (Birmingham, Ala.) defeated Larry Sloan and Kato Richardson, 6-2.
The success continued as Belmont swept the singles matches. Ilić, the reigning OVC Player of the Week, was able to continue his success with a dominating performance, winning, 6-0, 6-2, over Shashank Nautiyal at No. 2.
With two matches left in the regular season, Belmont stands atop the OVC with an unblemished record in conference play.
Belmont's next match will be back home at Centennial Sportsplex, as they host Jacksonville State on Friday, April 13. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
