NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team defeated Tennessee State 5-2 in an OVC match played Thursday afternoon in Nashville.
Belmont earned the doubles point as they took two of the three matches. At position two, freshmen Maria Plaksina and Terra Sheldon dominated Ani Popiashvili and Pragati Natraj 6-1. Then, at three, junior Mical Johnson and freshman Sarah Brackin beat Aarushi Kakkar and Abhilasha Vishwanath 6-1. The match at number one was unfinished.
In singles, the Bruins continued their solid play as they took four of the six matches to clinch the match victory over the Tigers. At number two, freshman Drew Hawkins claimed victory over Aarushi Kakkar 6-2, 6-1. Then at three, fellow freshman Erin Allen beat Phoenix Cage 6-2, 6-2. Brackin outlasted Abhilasha Vishwanath at number four 6-4, 4-6, and 10-8, while at five, Sheldon defeated Ashia Jones 6-1, 6-2.
The women's tennis team is back in action tomorrow aftrenoon as they close out OVC regular season play against Jacksonville State at Centennial Sportsplex starting at 1:00pm CT.
