CASHIERS, N.C. – Spurred by a birdie filled final round, the Belmont men's golf team moved up five spots and finished in seventh place at this week's J.T. Poston Invitational held at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley near Cashiers, North Carolina.
During the tournament's final day, the field had to finish both their second and third rounds. The Bruins carded an ever par 284 in the second round and then surged with a 13 under par 271 in the final round to move up five spots and finish in seventh place with a three round score of 844. The final round 271 included four scores in the 60s, including two 67s by juniors Bogle LaRue and Jack Uselton.
Georgia Southern won the team title with a tournament record 805 (-47). South Carolina finished one shot behind in second at 806.
Two Bruins finished among the top-30. Freshman Luke Whitney posted his first career top-20 finish as he tied for 16th place at 208. On the final day, the Texas native carded rounds of 67 and 68, which included a total of 12 birdies over the two rounds. Junior Bogle LaRue tied for 30th at 210 after carding a 71 and 67 on Tuesday. His round of 67 was highlighted by an eagle and four birdies.
Other Belmont scores from the tournament included: junior Evan Davis (T-42, 214), junior Jack Uselton (T-52, 216), and freshman Alex Whitehead (T-79, 224).
South Carolina's Ryan Hall won medalist honors with a 54-hole mark of 199.
The men's golf team takes a couple weeks off before returning to action close to home at the APSU Intercollegiate held October 14-15 at Dickson's Greystone Golf Course.
