Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Belmont Bruins dropped 90-26 to the No. 9/10 ranked Maryland Terrapins in the final game of the Daytona Beach Invitational at the Ocean Center Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Cam Browning led the Bruins (3-4) with six points and three rebounds, as senior Maddie Wright added four points and a team-high nine rebounds. Overall, five different Bruins recorded three or more rebounds in the game.
Four players logged double-figure points for the Terrapins (7-1), while senior Kaila Charles propelled the squad with 20 points, five rebounds and a trio of assists.
Belmont held Maryland to just four points through the first four minutes of the opening quarter. The Bruins first got on the scoreboard at the 6:02 mark via the charity stripe from senior Ellie Harmeyer. Harmeyer found the net again minutes later, but the Terrapins finished with a 6-0 run to take a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.
Freshman Nikki Baird kicked off Belmont's scoring in the second quarter with a make from 3-point range less than a minute in. A layup from Wright cut the Maryland lead to 15-8 with seven minutes left in the half. The Terrapins responded with a 7-0 run over the following 48 seconds. A 3-pointer from freshman Kiki Britzmann gave the Bruins some juice, but Maryland still held a 37-17 advantage at the halftime break.
Harmeyer and Wright combined for nine of Belmont's 17 first-half points, as eight different players grabbed rebounds in the first 20 minutes. The Bruins also ripped six steals away from the Terrapins through two quarters of play.
Senior Maura Muensterman opened the second half with a deep 3-pointer for Belmont just nine seconds in. However, Maryland held the Bruins scoreless for the rest of the quarter, as it took a 65-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Belmont got back on the board with a pair of quick buckets from Browning with three minutes remaining in the game. Browning went on to score each of the Bruins' final six points in the game, as the Terrapins logged the 90-26 victory.
In total, seven separate Belmont players scored on the afternoon, as Muensterman dished out a team-high three assists. Seven Bruins also logged 20 or more minutes on the hardwood against Maryland.
INTERCEPTORS: Belmont tallied seven steals against the Terrapins, which ties its season-high mark that it set against UCF at home on Nov. 9.
QUALITY QUARTER: The Bruins are one of two teams this season to hold Maryland to 12 or fewer first-quarter points.
CAM ON A ROLL: Freshman Cam Browning combined for 20 points and 11 rebounds over the last three games for Belmont. Browning logged a season-high nine points against Virginia Tech Friday and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds at Arkansas last Wednesday.
